| Using the Evacuation Routes and Emergency Facilities Interactive Map
|
| This is an interactive mapping application that allows users to explore the City of Philadelphia’s evacuation routes and emergency facilities. There is a toolbar in the upper left corner of the map window that contains five menus: Map, Navigation, High-Rise Evacuation, Heat Emergency, and Help as well as an address search tool and a zoom slider bar.
Move your mouse over the Map menu, and three different options appear: Street Map, Aerial Map, and Print.

Click Street Map to show the City of Philadelphia street map with the evacuation routes. This map displays by default when the page is opened. -
Click Aerial Map to show an aerial photograph of the City of Philadelphia with the evacuation routes. -
Click Print to print the map view that is currently displayed. You will have the option of entering your own title that will print above the map.
Move your mouse over the Navigation menu, and four different options appear: Zoom In, Zoom Out, Full Extent, and Pan Map.

To zoom in and view a smaller area of the City with more detail, click the Zoom In tool, and then click on the map and drag a box around the area you want to zoom to. -
To zoom out and view a larger area of the City with less detail, click the Zoom Out tool, and then click on the map and drag a box. The smaller the box is, the more the map will zoom out. -
Click Full Extent to return the map view to the original citywide extent. -
To move the map view without zooming in or out, click the Pan Map tool. Then click on the map, hold-down your mouse button, and move your mouse to drag the map view. -
Note: There is a zoom slider bar below the toolbar along the left side of the map window that can also be used to control the zoom. Drag the marker up to zoom in or down to zoom out.
Move your mouse over the High-Rise Evacuation menu, and two different items appear: High-Rise Buildings and Evacuation Rallying Points.

Click on High-Rise Buildings, and building icons will display on the map showing the locations of high-rise office buildings in Center City and University City. Hold your mouse over a building icon to find out more information about the building, including the name, address, and assigned evacuation rallying point. -
Click on Evacuation Rallying Points, and flag icons will display on the map showing the locations of the high-rise office building evacuation rallying points for Center City and University City. Each high-rise office building has been assigned to an evacuation rallying point. Hold your mouse over a rallying point icon to find out the rallying point name. -
Note: When the high-rise buildings or evacuation rallying points are turned on, a table listing the buildings and/or rallying points will display on the right side of the screen. This table can also be used to locate a building or rallying point. To do so, scroll through the list, and click on a location. The map will zoom to and display information about that location. To remove the buildings and/or rallying points from the map, click the close button ("x" icon) in the upper right corner of the table. If you wish to close the table only and retain the icons on the map, click the minimize button (green arrow icon) instead.
Move your mouse over the Heat Emergency menu, and three different items appear: Cooling Centers, Thirst Quencher Sites, and Pools and Spraygrounds.

Click on Cooling Centers, and sun icons will display on the map showing the locations of cooling centers throughout the City. Hold your mouse over a cooling center icon to find out more information about the facility, including the name, address, and phone number. The orange arrow below the facility information provides a link to the facility website. -
Click on Thirst Quencher Sites, and drinking water icons will display on the map showing the locations of Philadelphia firehouses where citizens can request a bottle of water as part of the Operation Thirst Quencher program. Hold your mouse over a thirst quencher site icon to find out the fire station name and location. -
Click on Pools and Spraygrounds, and swimming pool icons will display on the map showing the locations of public swimming pools throughout the City. Hold your mouse over a swimming pool icon to find out more information about the location, including name, address, and phone number. -
Note: When the cooling centers, thirst quencher sites, or pools and spraygrounds are turned on, a table listing the sites will display on the right side of the screen. This table can also be used to locate a facility. To do so, scroll through the list, and click on a location. The map will zoom to and display information about that location. To remove the locations from the map, click the close button ("x" icon) in the upper right corner of the table. If you wish to close the table only and retain the icons on the map, click the minimize button (green arrow icon) instead.
Move your mouse over the Help menu, and two different links appear: Help and Home.
To use the address search tool, enter an address or intersection into the space labeled “Search an Address”. Then press the search address button to the right to zoom to that location. Note that to locate an address, it must be within the City of Philadelphia.

How can I locate my address?
Why am I receiving an "address not found" error message when I try to locate my address?

Use the zoom slider bar on the left side of the map window or the zoom tools in the Navigation menu. To use the zoom in and zoom out tools, you must click on the map and drag a box after selecting the tool. Alternatively, if you are using a mouse with a scroll wheel, you may also use that to zoom in and out.
How do I clear pop-up windows or address search locations from the map?

Use the Street Map and Aerial Map options from the Map menu. The City street map is displayed by default. To turn on the aerial photo, click Aerial Map. To return to the City street map view, click Street Map.
How do I find the evacuation routes around my home or office?

Type your address into the space labeled "Search an Address". Then click the search address button to the right. The map will zoom to your address and display the evacuation routes surrounding that location. -
Use the zoom and pan tools to change the map extent as you view the evacuation routes in your area. Zooming in will provide additional detail, including direction of travel on one-way streets.
How do I find my high-rise office building's evacuation rallying point?

Evacuation rallying points are currently assigned for high-rise office buildings in Center City and University City. To determine the evacuation rallying point for your building, click on High-Rise Buildings in the High-Rise Evacuation menu. This will display the buildings on the map. -
Locate your building by using the address search tool, zooming into the location of your building, or selecting your building from the building table on the right side of the screen. -
Move your mouse over your building on the map, and the rallying point name will display in the pop-up window.
How do I determine my evacuation zone?

Evacuation zones are the same as Philadelphia Police Department districts. If you know what police district you are in, that is also your evacuation zone. -
To figure out your evacuation zone using this map, search for your address and zoom in on the location. Dark blue numbers will be displayed around the map identifying the evacuation zones. What do the different colored evacuation routes mean?

Purple evacuation routes are designated for pedestrians and mass transit only. -
Yellow evacuation routes are designated for pedestrians and all vehicles. -
Brown evacuation routes are designated for private vehicles only. -

If one of the zoom tools is selected, information will not display in the pop-up window when the mouse moves over a high-rise building or evacuation rallying point icon. To correct this, select the pan tool and move your mouse back over the icon of interest to display the information.

High-Rise Building: A building seven stories or taller; in particular, high-rise building evacuation rallying points apply to office buildings seven stories or taller
Evacuation Rallying Point: A designated location where building occupants can gather in the event that their building is evacuated; evacuation rallying points have been centrally assigned for all office buildings seven stories or taller in Center City and University City
